A positive HIV status by itself is not a reason for deferment from military service. There is a whole gradation of the health condition of an HIV-infected citizen that determines whether he can serve at all, and particularly on the front. Lawyer Yuriy Aivazyan wrote this on the portal 'Yuristy.UA'.

Positive HIV status and military service

A citizen reached out to lawyers inquiring whether a positive HIV status serves as a basis for deferment from mobilization or recognition of unfitness for military service. Lawyer Yuriy Aivazyan emphasized that this status alone does not grant a deferment.

'In order to receive a temporary unfitness or complete unfitness for military service, you need to undergo a military medical commission. The degree of fitness depends on the course of the disease. A positive HIV status does not automatically mean you will be recognized as unfit',

From unfitness to full fitness

Aivazyan explained what the conclusion of the military medical commission might be. If the disease caused by HIV (progressive) proceeds with immune decompensation, such a citizen is recognized as unfit for military service. A citizen who has a disease caused by HIV, with immune subcompensation, is considered fit for service in military supply units, TCC and SP, VVNZ, training centers, institutions, medical units, logistics units, communication units, operational support, and security. If the HIV-caused disease is stable or completely asymptomatic, with immune compensation, such a citizen is completely fit for military service.
