In India, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner passenger plane of Air India crashed immediately after taking off from Ahmedabad airport, and all 242 people on board were killed. This was reported by the local newspaper Indian Express, citing the police.
According to Reuters, the plane was on flight AI171 to London Gatwick Airport. Onboard were 169 Indian citizens, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian.
International reaction to the tragedy
Rescue workers and firefighters are working at the scene. According to rescuers, more than 100 bodies have been recovered from the debris and taken to the Ahmedabad hospital. Earlier, reports had indicated that 30-35 bodies had been found.
Witnesses reported seeing thick black smoke rising near the airport. Photos from the scene show the tail section of the plane on the roof of a building and debris with the registration number 'VT-ANB'.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed condolences over the tragedy: 'We were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, India. In this Time of mourning, I express our heartfelt thoughts to the victims' families.'
