Switzerland may introduce payment cards for refugees.

Switzerland creates payment system for asylum seekers
The Swiss Parliament has supported the creation of a payment system for asylum seekers based on special debit cards. The purpose of this system is to prevent asylum seekers from converting social assistance into cash and transferring it back home. The decision was made by the chamber of parliament, the National Council. Debates on the possibility of issuing credit or debit cards to asylum seekers instead of cash are ongoing in several cantons.
This new payment system will have a deterrent effect as it will limit the use of funds paid out in social assistance. The introduction of such cards will help ensure targeted use of these funds and will not attract citizens seeking asylum in Switzerland.
The left-wing parties opposed this decision, but it was still supported in parliament. Now the Federal Council must deal with the implementation of this system across the country. For its part, the Permanent Conference of Cantonal Directors of Social Security opposes such payment cards but claims that finding a way to convert funds into cash will not be difficult.
