What Latin letters mean on Ukrainian car number plates.

Car registration numbers in Ukraine currently do not indicate the registration region. Recently, the region code on a car's number plate indicated in which area of Ukraine the vehicle was registered. Today, this system has undergone significant changes.

Number outside the region

In 2023, the Ministry of Internal Affairs issued an order that changed the requirements for state number plates in Ukraine, marking the beginning of the transformation of the system under which car numbers indicated the 'registration' of vehicles to specific regions of our country. Later, two new series of plates were approved, which further confused drivers, as they are intended for vehicles registered outside the regions. Even-numbered combinations of letters, especially from the Latin alphabet, mean something completely different.

What the letters mean

• The combinations of letters ED or DC on number plates are intended for cars whose purchase-sale agreement was concluded using the driver's electronic cabinet in the unified information system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs;
• The combinations of letters DI or PD are intended for transport number plates if the purchase agreement was formalized through the Unified State Portal of e-services, particularly through the 'Diia' application.

These letter combinations are placed where usually the administrative-territorial affiliation of the vehicle's registration place is indicated.

In 2023, the Ukrainian system of number plates for cars underwent changes - now car numbers do not indicate the registration region. Drivers should carefully study the new codes that now denote different conditions for the registration of vehicles.
