Kyiv Residents Shocked by Their Knowledge of Statehood Day - Survey.

Today marks the Day of Ukrainian Statehood, which coincides with the Day of the Baptism of Kyiv Rus and the day of honoring Prince Volodymyr the Great. Journalist Anna Syryk from Novyny.LIVE surveyed Kyiv residents to see if they remember this holiday.

What do the capital's residents know about Statehood Day?

Most of the surveyed Kyiv residents could not recall which holiday is celebrated in Ukraine on July 15. However, they are well aware of the history of the baptism of Kyiv Rus and the achievements of Prince Volodymyr the Great.

'It is a well-known fact that Volodymyr the Great, by marrying a Byzantine princess, encouraged Kyiv Rus to adopt Christianity,' said Kyiv resident Svitlana.

Some city dwellers confidently stated that they know about the commemorative date that began to be celebrated in Ukraine in 2021. 'July 15 is the Day of Saint Volodymyr. The date of the baptism of Kyiv Rus is conditional, but it is celebrated today as well. Statehood Day is linked to these dates,' noted Serhii.

History of the holiday

The Day of Ukrainian Statehood was established on August 24, 2021, at the initiative of President Volodymyr Zelensky. The initial date was chosen as July 28, which is also when the Baptism of Kyiv Rus-Ukraine is celebrated according to the Julian calendar. But then this date was moved to July 15 after transitioning to the New Julian church calendar. The celebration of this holiday is intended to remind us of the centuries-old history of Ukrainian statehood, which dates back to the times of Kyiv Rus and other states.
