Ukrainian storks survived under the snow
On April 8, the nest of the famous Ukrainian stork couple, Odarka and Hrytsyk, was covered in snow. The birds spent the night huddled together to keep their four eggs warm. Odarka, who is incubating the eggs, was particularly motionless. This helps the storks conserve heat and energy, explained ornithologist Iryna Sarazhytska.
Some observers were concerned that Odarka might freeze. But Sarazhytska stated that in the village of Lelyaky, where the nest is located, it will be warm during the day, so there is hope that the snow will melt and the birds will feel better.
Scientist Anatoliy Podobailo from the National Nature Park reassured that the eggs are not in danger, as the parents are keeping them warm. However, the birds find it difficult to search for food due to the worsening weather conditions.
Podobailo also noted that researchers hope to see the first chick soon, which is expected to happen around May 1.
